At the start of creative writing, we all began this course as second semester seniors. Little did we know that we would finish off our senior year in our living rooms. What was once going to be a three month period of fun and memories now turned into three painful months of yearning for physical connections. For many seniors, Covid-19 has taken away the defining moments of senior year. We no longer have the opportunity to dance with our closest friends and significant others at senior prom. We no longer get the chance to show pride for our chosen colleges amongst our friends. We no longer throw our graduation caps in unison after hearing the words, “Congratulations to the Class of 2020!” Instead, we have the status of prom still unknown, a virtual commitment day, and graduation within the constraints of our cars. Despite taking away these special moments, social distancing and self-quarantine has given us seniors one thing: the chance to spend the time to work on ourselves. With all this time on our hands, we have the opportunity to work on our mental health and also explore hobbies/interests that we may have never discovered. During these trying times, I have found that exploring different forms of art help to minimize the stress in my life. Whether it be drawing on sneakers or making abstract art, I give myself the time to separate myself from the craziness around me. I would never have expected art to have such a strong impact on my quarantine experience. As much as I want to be angry and upset about the current situation, I have much to be thankful for.
