At the beginning of this course, I expected it to be a relaxing experience where I would be able to create artwork. Although this turned out to be true in the end, I did not expect the transformative effect that this class would have on me. Through the many mind maps, poems, and prose pieces created, I have been given the chance to show who I am. Not only as a student, but also as an individual and an artist. For a majority of high school, I have hidden under a mask as an attempt to preserve the “ugly truth” of my life. I have always viewed my personal obstacles as burdens and never managed to find anyone who could relate to my experiences. However, I now recognize the importance of letting those closest to you get a chance to know the real you. Even if people can’t always necessarily relate with you, the compassion and sympathy from others provides comfort when you need it the most. This class has taught me that not only is it okay to be vulnerable, but it is also when you produce your best work. If you don’t “bleed on paper” you miss out on the chance to reveal the many components of your identity. By always playing it on the safe side, no one would ever know your creativity or the things you are most passionate about. The expression of one’s self is just one of the many things I’ve learned to do in this class, but is the most important takeaway for me. Over the course of the semester, I have become someone who isn’t afraid to talk about the “thing.” This course has taught me to be brave when it came to discussing very personal events. Mr. Weinstein has pushed my boundaries in the best way possible, and I couldn’t be more thankful. Thank you for teaching me it is okay to lower the walls that have guarded my personal life for so long.
